In France, these china characters are baked in a “galette des rois” (the kings' cake) which is generally eaten throughout the month of January.
Depending on the region, the cake comes in different varieties: it can be made of puff pastry or like a brioche, some are filled with almond paste, and others are decorated with candied fruits. One or two feve are baked inside the cake, like a fava bean.
During the tirage des rois (the cutting of the cake), the youngest child hides under the table and decides who gets which slice of the cake, the person who “pulls the fève” (finds it in his/her slice of cake) becomes king or queen for the day, receives a paper crown, chooses a partner and rules the day! In some families, this person is also obliged to provide champagne for the day, nice!
This "pulling of the kings." celebration takes place during Epiphany (6 January or the first Sunday of the month).
